How do I Attract Students To My Oriental Dance Classes?

As I have said many times, Oriental Dance (more known as Bellydance) isn’t, unfortunately, the first dance someone wishes to learn when they start thinking about entering dance classes. There is a big effort to be made by the professor in order to collect and in retain students.

So to attract new students it’s necessary, as all other business, a good promotion (you can check out my blog post The Importance of Management In a Dance Career, where I published the requirements to start a business in Oriental Dance according to my academic studies). So to retain students, the teacher needs a good product, that is, interesting and captivating classes that make the student want to stay and learn more.

To help you, here you have some “techniques” I use to attract students for the gourgeous world of Oriental Dance:

1. Since the first class, I encourage them to have fun, to loose up and have self-confidence. All of us want to go to a place where we feel well and where we can relax after a working day.

2. In the first year, I make sure I show my students how the world of Bellydance is vast and beautiful explaining them all the history of Oriental Dance and all the styles that exist and all there is to explore.

3. I produce shows regularly where students can present their choreographies from classes and/or created by them putting in practice what they have learned. Through performance, students get motivated and excited for more and get a feeling of conquest and overcoming that motivates them to stay in class and learn more.

4. The content of my classes is structured and communicated so that the students know what they will learn throughout the lective year, as well as what they will learn in the next years. When they know what they will learn and see their colleagues doing it, they get motivated to stay in classes and follow the path of their colleagues and keep evolving.

5.  Every class, I also convey a positive energy and passion for what I do. When you feel the enthusiasm and motivation of the teacher, the students also get infected and in love with the art, eager to learn more. For me, it’s very natural, because I love the dance and I want to spread that love.
