The Importance of Business Management in a Dance Career

As some of you may know, I have a bachelor and two master degrees in Business Management. Many of you may think my academic background has nothing to do with what I do nowadays and even that my field of studies is completely different from what I work on now. On one hand, yes it’s true, but on the other hand, my Business Management skills are much more useful now than when I worked in a company. I’ll share with you some of the “management taks” I do in my dance career, and the importance my studies have on my professional life.

This was the first poster I did where I shared my Oriental Dance classes in Setúbal, in 2015.

This was the first poster I did where I shared my Oriental Dance classes in Setúbal, in 2015.

1. I started lecturing Oriental Dance classes in 2015 and there was no schools with teaching spots available, so I decided to be an “entrepreneur” and found a space I could rent to start my lessons and I took care of all the advertisement: I created my website, social media pages and I contacted the Cityhall of Setúbal asking for help. In the first month I only had one student, but it started growing, and nowadays I have more than 70 wonderful students in Setúbal. Comunication is something essential for our business to grow and because of that we should invest many working hours and financial resources on it.

2. My course enabled me to highly develop my analytical, infomation’s structuring and organization, and decision-making skills. I’m constantly analysing other businesses and seeing what dancers and artists of other fields do (we call this benchmarking). I am always askings my family and friends (poor them!) for suggestions and opinions so that I won’t guide myself only by my own opinion. I may not write the reports I did in college but all the process in there.

3. We artists want to live from our art, but we have to understand that, if we go this way, we become business owners, which isn’t different from any other business with services. We need to think what services we can offer to our target audience, create new produts and promote them, as I do with my many services that you can find on this website such as: my Bachelorette Party Pack Girls Get Together, my Coaching for Competition Pack Conquer the Stage, my Choreography Pack Choreo Blast

There is much more business tips I could offer and, with time, I will share with you much more so you can grow your dance business. For now, you can read other posts about Business Management, namely 5 Indispensable Things To Build Your Oriental Dance Business and also 5 Tips To Have a Great Website that can help you. I have ideas for much more, my only problem is not having that much time to devote myself to sharing information. Being a dancer, choreographer, teacher and dance school owner is not easy… but I love being an artist and having my own business.

Did you think my field of studies had influence on my Bellydance work?
